Wedding Canopy for T. Sinai, Toronto ON
Polyester, silk, rayon, mixed fabrics
Machine appliqué
290 x 366 cm. (9'6" x 12')
This chuppah evokes the tradition of being married under a tallit, and incorporates as well the idea of sky, sun, moon and eighteen tiny stars. It also melds with design elements established in the art glass ark and windows.
In the centre section a text from Hosea is painted with acrylics onto silk organza in Hebrew and English: "And I will betroth you to me in righteousness and justice and loving kindness and compassion."
It was donated in memory of Nat Waldman, who had four daughters. There is personal meaning for me also in some of the fabrics: remnants from an outfit I made when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, and from my youngest daughter's consecration dress.
