Ark Curtain for Beth David B'nai Israel Beth Am Congregation, Toronto
Primarily silk on cotton, beads, bells
Appliqué
Two panels, each 81 x 244 cm. (32" x 96")
Mindful of this being a gift from the Sisterhood for the chapel used for daily services, the four elongated objectsShabbat candles, Persian Torah scroll, havdalah candle and spice boxconnect home with synagogue, individual with community, and Shabbat with the rest of the week.
Three bells suspended from the rimon of the Torah ring softly when the curtain is drawn.
The irregular bands linking the group show that, through their use, these objects gain a spiritual presence and help to create what R. Abraham Joshua Heschel called an "architecture of time" fundamental to Judaism's joy and endurance.
